The SpectWhirl is a hybrid spectral audio effect that demonstrates a unique capability to extract and rearrange sine wave components from an input signal, resulting in innovative sound textures and bell-like tones.
- The input sound is converted into sine wave components, categorized into four distinct groups: harmonic, inharmonic, 12-tone equal temperament (12-edo), and others.
- Each component is routed through a delay line with feedback, enhancing the overall sonic complexity.
- A selection of frequency shifters and sample-and-hold effects are applied both before and after the delay lines for further manipulation.
- Each set of sine wave components can be refined using filters.
- All parameters are capable of instant automation through gesture recording, streamlining the creative process.
It is important to note that this effect is resource-intensive and demands a modern computing device for optimal performance.
Quick Start:
The user interface features a top row of controls that activates various sections: scene editor ("scene"), control switch ("edit"), and zoom controls.
- When the "edit" option is enabled, users can display or conceal various controls (labeled as "ctrl") and toggle gesture recording automation for specific controls (marked with ">").
- The main control surface presents a sonogram with color-coded elements based on their assigned groups: red for harmonic, orange for inharmonic, green for 12-edo, and blue for others. Each "lane" offers controls for adjusting delay time.
- A left-facing triangle serves as the start locator, determining the initial delay time.
- A square icon allows for simultaneous adjustment of both start and end locators.
- Moving the left locator reveals the right locator, denoted by a triangle, indicating the end of the selected region. The secondary delay time is dictated by the difference between the left and right locators.
- Dragging within the area of a lane alters the appearance of a four-dotted/one-circle indicator, changing the arpeggio mode. A leftmost position (one circle) synchronizes components, while the maximum value (diagonal line with circles) triggers sequential playback.
- All configurations can be saved as "scenes," allowing users to switch between multiple scenes easily. A set of buttons facilitates moving, adding, or deleting scenes. All scenes are stored as machine states which can be exported or imported as either a single file or as separate files within the "setup" view.
The standalone version initializes with an output level set to -70 dB to prevent feedback issues.
